Kia Carens: Windshield Wiper/Washer / Description and operation
Front Wiper Safety Function
1. |
If snow prevents the operation of the passenger side wiper arm and blade.
; If the driver turns on the wipers while driving with the cowl cover
covered with snow.
(1) |
The driver side wiper reduces its operating angle not to interfere
with the passenger side wiper arm and blade.
The operating angle of the driver side wiper varies depending
on the locking angle of the passenger side wiper.
|
(2) |
Where the blade stops when you turn off the wiper switch while
the wiper is still locked.
–
|
If you turn off the multifunction wiper switch, the
passenger side wiper stops at a corner. However, the
driver side wiper may not stop at its original setting
position (the mark on the glass) due to a safety function
that stops the driver side wiper at a location where
it does not interfere with the passenger side wiper.
|
–
|
Troubleshootin : If you turn on the multifunction wiper
switch after clearing away the snow, the blade stops
at its normal position (the mark on the glass).
|
|
The safety function is activated to prevent any interference
between the blades when you turn on or off the wiper switch
under the wiper lock condition. If you move the wipers more
than once under normal condition (no wiper is locked), the safety
function is deactivated and the wipers work normally.
|
|

Operating logic of the wiper safety function in a case of communication
error
(1) |
Fault in the LIN communication between the wiper motor and the
BCM
–
|
Operation mode : Forced activation of the customer safety
mode, which forces the wipers to move for the safety
of passengers when this communication error occurs.
; High 5 minutes → Low 5 minutes → INT 5 minutes
→ Stop (When you turn on the wiper switch, the wipers
do not move.)
|
|
(2) |
Fault in communications between the driver side wiper and the
passenger side wiper
|
– |
Operation mode : Only the driver side wiper works.

3. |
Automatic reduction of wiper speed to prevent wiper motor overload.
(1) |
This function reduces the operating speed of the wipers and
activates INT mode in order to prevent the wiper motors from
being damaged by an overload if the wipers operate continuously
on a dry windshield.
|
|
4. |
Logic to prevent the wiper blades from moving upward during high-speed
driving.
(1) |
When the vehicle drives at a high speed (above 190 km/h), the
wind pressure may weaken the binding force of the wiper motors,
thereby pushing the blades upward. To prevent this problem,
the automatic downward operation logic is activated. It forces
the blades to operate at a degree that is 0.5 degree lower than
normal when wind pressure places additional load on the wipers.
If you stop the wipers under this condition, the blades may
stop at a location 8 mm lower than the mark on the glass. If
you add moisture (washer fluid or water) to the windshield and
turn on the wipers, the blades return to their normal positions.
|
(2) |
If the vehicle encounters unexpectedly high wind pressure while
driving at a high speed (above 190 km/h), it weakens the binding
force between the wipers and the wiper motors to protect the
latter. This may cause the blades to move upward and stop in
the middle of the windshield although the adjustment function
previously mentioned is activated. In such an instance, reduce
the vehicle's speed and turn on the wipers to make them work
normally again.

Wiper arm lock function during an automatic car wash
1. |
This function locks the wiper motors for six minutes when external forces
are exerted on the vehicle. For example, the function is activated when
the vehicle goes through an automatic wash with the IGN OFF and the
ACC ON because the force of the cleaning brushes may move the wiper
arms and blades.
It is also activated when an external force is exerted on the vehicle
within 45 minutes after IGN OFF and ACC ON.
The external force here means an external influence that can change
the operating angle of the wiper motor by more than one degree.
|
2. |
The lock function is activated only once when you turn the ignition
key to ON and then OFF. It is deactivated after six minutes.
|
3. |
Operation logic
The wiper arms and blades may move out of their normal positions while
the vehicle goes through an automatic car wash with the IGN OFF. After
the car wash is finished, turn on the ignition and start the wipers.
The wipers will return to their normal positions.
If the vehicle goes through an automatic car wash with the IGN ON, the
wiper motors are automatically locked. As a result, the wipers do not
return to their normal positions as they do in the above case.
|
Troubleshooting wiper misplacement and driver/passenger side blade up-down misalignment
; Proceed as follows if the assembled wiper arm and blade have moved from the
normal position due to external effects.
1. |
If the wiper arm and blade are out of the standstill (setting) position
(1) |
If the wiper arm is moved by an unnatural external force
; If the wiper arm is moved by the cleaning brushes from an
automatic car wash with the IGN OFF and the ACC ON
|
(2) |
If the driver/passenger side blade is upside down
|
|
2. |
Troubleshooting
(1) |
Abnormal positioning by an unnatural external force
a. With the IGN ON, activate the wiper multifunction switch.
(MIST/ HIGH/ INT)
b. The wipers move to the setting position.
|
(2) |
If the driver/passenger side blade is upside down
a. If you turn on the ignition, the wipers move once automatically.
b. The wipers move to the setting position.
